North Kalimantan, 1 March 2024 - A workshop aimed at collecting data and technical guidance for filling in REDD+ Safeguards data as well as identifying plans for preparing a Provincial Action Plan for implementing REDD+ in North Kalimantan Province was successfully held on 28-29 February 2024. This event is part of efforts to increase provincial capacity in preparing REDD+ architecture. This event was attended by 71 participants (consisting of 53 men and 18 women) who involved stakeholders from various levels, including representatives of regional governments, non-governmental organizations, indigenous communities, as well as academics and practitioners involved in the effort. forest preservation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The material presented in this workshop consisted of material relevant to the implementation of REDD+, including the status of implementation of REDD+ Safeguards in North Kalimantan Province, learning to fill in REDD+ Safeguards data from the experience of East Kalimantan and Jambi Provinces, as well as a simulation of filling in the SIS REDD+ website for North Kalimantan Province. Apart from that, participants were also involved in reviewing the completion of the Safeguards Implementation Assessment Tool (APPS) with the North Kalimantan Province Safeguards Working Group, formulating REDD+ action plans, identifying ideas related to REDD+ action plans, and formulating REDD+ Action Theory of Change. At the end of the event, participants were asked to respond to a questionnaire regarding the delivery of the material, the effectiveness of the simulation, the guidance and assistance provided, as well as the quality of the guidance provided during the activity. Responses from participants showed that the majority of them considered the materials, simulations and guides provided to be very helpful in understanding the concepts and steps involved in implementing REDD+ in North Kalimantan Province. The success of this workshop will be followed up with a follow-up meeting of the working group to finalize the REDD+ action plan and ongoing assistance for participants in implementing REDD+ in their respective regions. In REDD+ institutions, currently in North Kalimantan Province a REDD Plus Action Plan and Reporting Coordinator has been established (Regional Development Planning and Development Research Agency of North Kalimantan Province) and a Safeguards Coordinator (North Kalimantan Province Environmental Service). Furthermore, this institution, through assistance from the Directorate of Climate Change Mitigation, is working to prepare a North Kalimantan Province REDD+ Action Plan and fulfill the North Kalimantan Province REDD+ Safeguard document on the SIS-REDD website. This workshop can be a solid foundation for developing sustainable practices in efforts to preserve forests and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in North Kalimantan Province. This workshop activity was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry with BPDLH and UNDP as well as the Regional Government of North Kalimantan, with funding support from the Green Climate Fund through project activities to achieve the RBP REDD+ GCF Output 1 project.
